Germany lands in fifth position: FIVB Youth World Championship - Volleyball
The girls’ volleyball team of Germany defeated Brazil in the final match for the fifth position on Sunday, August 21. Brazil ended their stint at the FIVB Youth World Championship badly and received a 1-3 (25-23, 18-25, 19-25, and 19-25) defeat from Germany.
It was a big achievement as the European team earned such a high finish for the first time in the history of FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship.
Match summery
The match between Germany and Brazil was an intense battle from start to end. The game was opened with an early exchange of powerful serves as both teams added back-to-back points. First technical timeout showed a one-point lead for Brazil over Germany,
8-7. Germany changed tactics to dismantle their opponents and attacked from different angles. Nonetheless, the South American players continued scoring points and widened the gap to 16-13 at the next mandatory stop. Gabriela Braga Guimaraes was the key-player
for Brazil as she was confronted by German Juliane Langgemach and Jennifer Geerties. Tension rose high when the score tied at 19-all but Brazil claimed the opening set on Germany’s mistake near the end, 25-23.
The Germans came back strong in the second set and they controlled the action. Brazil trailed behind with a 2-point margin at the first technical timeout. The Germans moved ahead and converted the scores to 16-14. Juliane Langgemach attacked from German
side, while Rosamaria Montibeller of Brazil put in great efforts for her side. As the two teams approached the end-line, it turned into a heated competition. Finally, Germany hit the mark and closed off the second set with a 25-18 victory.
The next two sets of the match progressed in the same fashion. Long rallies were exchanged and ball kept rolling over the net at great speed. Brazil struggled to regain control of operations but Germany denied all their efforts. The Germans captured the
last two sets with a similar score of 25-19 and declared match victory. Susanne Besa of Germany claimed to be the top-scorer of the match with her contribution of 25 points, while Brazil’s Gabriela was the most highlighted player on the Brazilian side and
was credited for 15 points.
Post-match
“We are very happy for the 5th place we achieved. We are also very happy to have played with Brazil which is a very strong team. Congratulations to my team, we are now in the top 5,” said the German Coach, Jens Tietbohl, after the match. The captain of the
team, Jennifer Geerties added, “We are one of the best 5 teams in the world so we are very happy for that. It was a good match for us because we played very well.
Thomas Mauricio, the Brazilian Head Coach was disappointed with his team’s performance. In his view, the bad receptions caused major damage to Brazil. He appreciated the powerful serving of the Germans and congratulated them for making it to the top-5.
