Germany overpower Greece for 5th position: Day 13 – European Water Polo Championships
German team served notice of their talent by overpowering Greece in the classification round for fifth-sixth position on thirteenth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 28 at the Pieter van den
Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The championship is organised by the European aquatic sports managing body, Ligue Europeenne de Natation (LEN). These Championships are of considerable value as these precede the 2012 London Olympic Games and provide an opportunity to all players to improve
their weaknesses before the battle royal.
Germany earned fifth best spot of the tournament by defeating Greece with a lead of three goals. The Greek squad experienced loss at the hands of German team and ended sixth with a 9-6 deficit in the four-quarter match.
Unsurprisingly, Greek players showered their expertise and remained dominant in the first quarter of the event. They scored two goals in the first quarter while Germany managed to mark a single goal only and the round ended with a 1-2 effort from both sides.
The circumstances changed in the second quarter, where German squad notched up two consecutive goals and Greece was able to improve their score by just one fraction. Consequently, the score went up to 3-3 after the first half.
The German team showed determination and elevated their efforts in the third quarter. They outshined Greece’s accomplishment of two goals by clinching three goals and gained a lead of one goal. The score elevated to 6-5 after the third round.
The fourth quarter was very decisive as Greece had to score just one more goal to level out the score, but they failed to do so. The German squad continued their dominance by securing three goals while Greece was able to progress on the points table by just
one point and lost the match by three goals.
Sven Roeßing of Germany was announced man of the match for scoring three goals and playing a strong role in his team’s victory.
Furthermore, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled matches while the crowd acknowledged tremendous efforts of all teams in their respective matches.
