The flag was (re-)invented several times, but its meaning was most important during the so-called liberation wars against Napoleon in French-occupied Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. Supported by Russia, Sweden and Britain, the German states united against the French, and in 1813, Napoleon was defeated, and there was an end to the occupation. The German flag then used has since been a symbol of German unity, and that's its official meaning until today.
