Germany sweeps Bulgaria in the second round of FIVB Volleyball Men´s Junior World Championship
The German and Bulgarian sides clashed with each other on the 7th of August in the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Men´s Junior World Championship. The result was a clean sweep by the Germans at the Caio Martins gymnasium, Niteroi.
Even though the Bulgarians lost all three of the sets, they fought each one of them with spirit. The first set was close until the end but the second one was the toughest of all. Despite losing the first two sets of the game, the Bulgarians started the third
one with determination. However, the skill of the Germans proved to be stronger of the two and they sealed the deal at the following final set scores: 25-23, 29-27 and 26-24.
Stewart Bernard, the coach of the German team made the following comments at the press conference that was held after his team had won the match: “I´m very happy, because the match was difficult. Three years ago we played together to qualify for the Youth
World Championship and we lost. I'm happy we won today. The important thing today is that we served well, especially in the first set. Our side out was better. We blocked well."
The disappointed Bulgarian coach, Nikolay Jeliazkov, also spoke with reporters and said, “We tried very hard in this match after a lot of difficult matches up until now. It was close, but we made mistakes on the attack and our block was bad. Our serve was
not so good. Germany blocked much better and their defence was much better. The most important thing, they wanted this victory more than us.”
The first technical time out of the opening set came with a German lead at 8-6 which they were able to improve by 14-12. The Bulgarians closed in the gap at 16-15 and had the lead for a bit at 17-15 before the Germans tied the score at 17-17. However, it
was the Germans that were able to take the lead back at 21-20 and finally bag the set at 25-23.
The second set of the game was a tug of war for the most part but it reached a tie at 22-22. The Germans were at their third set point at 27-26 but the Bulgarians were able to create a tie. However, the Germans got the set in the end at 29-27.
The third set was intense like the first two and the match was still tied in the final stages at 23-23 but the Germans prevailed in sealing the deal and taking the match at 26-24.
With their recent win, the Germans have been able to tally a record of 2-1 in Pool H while the Bulgarians have a 1-2 statistic.
