Germany sweeps Korea on second day of FIVB Women’s World Cup - Volleyball
The second day of the FIVB Women’s World Cup started today, November 5, in Japan as Nagano and Hiroshima host the tournament’s matches. In the first match of the day in Nagano, the Germans took on the Korean squad. It did not take long for the match to reach
its close as the German squad was able to make a clean sweep over their opponents and win the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-16 and 25-15.
Not only did the Germans win the match by securing three back to back sets, they did so by dominating each set of the game. The first set was the only one in which the Koreans showed some resistance but it did not prove to be too strong to stop the Germans
from bagging a win. The loss of the opening set did not do well to the spirits of the Koreans and they experienced a decrease in their performance that enabled the Germans to win the second set easily. The third set followed the same pattern as its predecessor
and ended in a win for the Germans.
The coach of the German team, Giovanni Guidetti, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after the match reached its close: “I’m very happy about the performance of my team today. We were very focused and concentrated for this match.
We lost to Korea in the World Grand Prix and wanted to play better today, and we played a good match, especially in blocking and defence...I’m very happy; we played very good volleyball.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Korean team, Kim Hyung-Sil, shared his views in the following manner: “After yesterday’s match I thought we lacked preparation and training for this event. We also made many mistakes in receiving. We have lost two matches
in a row, so the spirit of the players is declining, which is a concern.”
The Germans were in the lead at the first technical time out in the first set of the game and were still leading at the second technical time out. The Koreans could not muster up the skill to stop the Germans from winning opening set at 25-20. The loss of
the first set further dampened the spirits of the Koreans as the Germans completely dominated them in the second as well as the third sets at 25-16 and 25-15 respectively.
The player that was able to tally the most point in the entire match belonged to the German squad. Maren Brinker earned the top scorer title after registering a total of 16 points in the entire match. On the other hand, the player that was able to post the
most points from the Korean end was Kim Yeon-Koung with a tally of 12.
