Germany trounce England 3-0 to ride into EuroHockey Championship finals – Hockey Update
The Men’s hockey team of Germany has emerged triumphant over England by three unanswered goals and qualified for the finals of the EuroHockey Championship.
The single-sided game was held on August 26, 2011 at the Warsteiner Hockey Park in Monchengladbach, Germany.
It is vital to mention here that the English team, the defending European Champions, failed to touch the scorecard on any occasion throughout the seventy minute of play. The Germans, the host of the EuroHockey Championship, delivered one of the masterpiece
performances against England and earned a spot in the finals of the tournament.
Apart from the playing performances, it was weather particularly the heavy showers that played a vital role in transforming the results. However, luck was with the Germans who at the end of the fixture received praise.
Head Coach England Jason Lee after losing the semi-final game spoke with the journalists and expressed reservations over the video referral system. He stated, “I thought we played really well tonight. The Germans are saying it was their defence that one
them the game and I certainly don’t think 3-0 if a fair reflection of the match.”
Amazingly, the game continued for more than two hours due to heavy showers and inundated turfs. The play remains suspended more than an hour in the second half of play. It is worth mentioning here that after Australia versus England Champions Trophy finals,
it was second game which was disturbed due to bad weather.
As per the importance of the game, the match between Germany and England was started in quite an offensive way. The players from the two sides particularly the strikers carried out plenty of attacks against each other that enthralled the spectators.
Phillipp Zeller of England held the ball in the very early minutes and drove through the 25-yard line after dribbling a couple of English defenders. He played a well-organised short into the cage to open the scoring for the home team. James Fair, the English
goalie did not have chance to stop the ball at any occasion.
After an end-to-end play, both the teams resumed the second half in quite impressive way. However, the English team could not impress the hosts despite extensive efforts. Oskar Deecke converted the first short corner after the suspended period and doubled
the tally. With two minutes remaining at the clock, Oliver Korn of Germany further extended the advantage up to three goals and sealed the victory for Germany at 3-0. The hosts moved into the finals of the 2011 EuroHockey Championship.
The Germans put on a brilliant display of hockey as they managed to restrict England from scoring any goals throughout the entire match.
