Germany’s Container tops Day 1, Quantum Racing trembles: 2011 Audi MedCup Region of Sardinia Trophy
First day of 2011 Audi MedCup Region of Sardinia Trophy finished with two races under strong winds. Germany’s sailing team, Container, got the better of the rest of the field on Day 1. The 2011 Marseille Trophy winners managed to win the first race, while
they stood second in the second. Race favourites, Quantum Racing couldn’t sail up to the standards and tumbled down at number six in both races.
The Region of Sardinia Trophy is the third of five regattas of 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit, which started from Wednesday, July 20 at Gulf of Cagliari off Sardinia’s capital. All sailing teams successfully started their sail on Sardinia waters on Day 1.
Container got lucky as they grabbed the first race victory despite tough weather conditions on the opening day. The wind was gusting up to 25 knots at times, but on average it blew around 15 to 17 knots across the racing area, which was a slight cause of
concern for the sailors. However, Container failed to retain their position in the second race and moved down to number two when Audi Sailing Team, powered by All4One, sailed ahead of them.
The favourites to clinch the title and 2011 Cascais Trophy winners, Quantum Racing couldn’t maintain their run in the trophy and finished last in both races. Despite the poor result however, Quantum Racing leads the overall results, and have a very slender
two point lead over Container.
The final result of 2011 Region of Sardinia Trophy after day one is given below:

6. Bribón (ESP) 7, 4 = 11 points
7. Quantum Racing (USA) 6, 6 = 12 points
8. Gladiator (GBR) 9(DNC), 9(DNC) = 18 points

1 - USA - QUANTUM RACING, Regatta 1 (19), Regatta 2 (30), Regatta 3 (12) = 61 points
2 - GER – CONTAINER, Regatta 1 (31.5), Regatta 2 (28.5), Regatta 3 (3) = 63 points
3 - ITA - AUDI AZZURRA SAILING TEAM, Regatta 1 (32.5), Regatta 2 (37), Regatta 3 (5) = 74.5 points
4 – RUS - SYNERGY RUSSIAN SAILING TEAM, Regatta 1 (37), Regatta 3 (39.5), Regatta 3 (10) = 86.5 points
