Germany’s Martin Kaymer plays down his ‘superstar’ status – PGA Tour Update
Martin Kaymer, the world number one golfer, in his recent talk with the media, insisted that he is nowhere close to sporting giants like Michael Schumacher, Boris Becker or Bernhard Langer and requested the media to stop comparing him with them.
The soft spoken star golfer who shot to fame in less than five years of his professional golfing career said that there are many a miles to go before he would come anywhere near to these legends who have struggled for a life time to reach this status. Kaymer said, "Such comparisons do not honestly sit well with me at all - those three dominated their sports for decades and inspired a whole country."
The 26-year-old German is undoubtedly proud of his achievements in such a short interval of time and attributes most of his success to hard work and to his coach and mentor f***y Sunesson. Kaymer, on his European tours alone, has won nine times in all, twice in 2008, twice in 2009 and four times last year.
Kaymer’s humble disposition not only speaks volumes about his good sporting nature but also beckons towards a more established golfer in the making. "I had planned, of course, to one day be at the top, but the fact it has happened at the start of the season is not something I would even have dreamed of. I want to keep playing successfully, win further titles, defend others and stay for as long as I can at number one," said Kaymer.
He is reportedly also fighting for recognition at home in Germany, which is predominantly the land of Formula One and Tennis as the more celebrated sports in the country. Many in the sporting circles often regard him as the new Bernhard Langer in the making, something which he does not really approve off. The country’s golfing legend, Langer himself lauded the young golfer many times and foresees him as someone who would take the sport to a new level for Germany. Langer considers Kaymer as a role model for Germany, exactly the kind that German golf needs and hoped that he stays up there for many years.
Kaymer lost the final of the Accenture Match Play tournament to the Englishman Luke Donald last week, but his rise to prominence is surely good news for the future of golf in his homeland.
