Germany’s Nurburgring circuit going through funding problems – Formula 1 news
Recent reports suggest that a political alliance in Germany is endangering the future of the Formula 1 grand prix that takes place at the legendary circuit known as Nurburgring.
Elections were held recently in the western Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany and according to the results, the ruling part of that area (Social Democratic Party) lost its absolute majority and had to form a coalition with the Green party.
According to reports, it is believed that the state funding for Nurburgring’s Formula 1 contract is under threat.
“I have nothing against car racing in the Eifel. I just have a problem if tax money is needed to ensure that more millions and billions are reaped in profits [by F1],” said the Green state party chief Daniel Kobler.
However, it has been revealed that the Green party is going to negotiate with the SPD party and is trying to look for a solution to this problem.
“In the negotiations with the SPD, we will work to permanently remove the subsidies for the 'Ring in the foreseeable future,” Kobler added.
Formula 1 is also going through a major financial crisis but the organisers of the sport (International Automobile Federation) are looking to introduce newer tracks to the calendar in order to take the sport to places where it is less known and try to increase
its popularity.
As a result, the Korean Grand Prix was introduced to the sport in 2010 and in 2011, the Indian Grand Prix is expected to become a part of the sport. The number of races is increasing as well but the fans are demanding for the classic and legendary circuits
more than these newer circuits.
According to a recently held survey, the tracks which the fans want are mostly in Europe. However, the FIA needs to convince the local government of the areas in order to stage races there.
The ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season has already seen three races in Australia, Malaysia and China. The fourth race of the year will take place in Turkey in three weeks time.
