Germany’s Tina Lutz, Susann Beucke lead Women fleet on Day 1: 470 Junior European Championship 2011
A familiar face in 470 Women sailing, Germany’s Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke, have taken an overall lead after first day’s races of 470 Junior European Championship Women’s fleet. The German sailors are one of the top contenders to grab the European title.
The second place finish was made by Netherlands’ Nina Keijzer and Anneloes Van Veen, who earned six points with a first and fifth place in both races of the day.
Beucke described the first day’s sailing as “rodeo sailing” as they sailed keeping themselves in firm control to cross the finish line at third place in Race 1 and clinch the second race. This racing season, the German duo has participated in the 470 European
Championships, 470 Junior Worlds and the 470 Junior Europeans and has performed convincingly during these championships.
While speaking to the local media after the races, Beucke said, “Tina and I are still in a position to go to the Olympics. We are up against another team and so far at the moment that is our big goal for this year. We need to secure the nation qualification
for the 2012 Olympics at the ISAF Worlds and be in front of the other German team. We just need to beat them by two places in Perth so it is really close.”
The pair is now aiming to win the 470 Junior European title and also want to represent their country at 2012 Olympics. After 470 Junior European Championships, Lutz and Beucke will next sail at the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Worlds in Perth.
Currently they are being challenged by Netherlands’ Nina Keijzer and Anneloes Van Veen, who are in second place with just a two-point difference.
