The Merseyside outfit could only finish as high as eighth in the table in the prevenient term after going through a series of dismal results in the early part of 2012.
Consequently, the former Reds chief and Kop legend, Kenny Dalglish, was sacked by the club’s owners, who instead, opted to bring in Brendan Rodgers.
After getting off to a stuttering start, the team have shown encouraging signs of improvement, gradually pushing their way into the top half of the table. However, much due to their inconsistency, they have failed to build a significant winning momentum
and been guilty of dropping points against the weaker oppositions.
With the complete signing off from the year 2012 with a commanding 3-0 win over Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314, the 32-year old predicted a successful 2013 for the Reds.
The English International claimed that his side were headed in the right direction under the management of Brendan Rodgers, and attributed their slip ups against weaker teams to the presence of myriad teenage players in the squad.
“Going into the New Year, there's plenty to be positive about. I'm excited about this Liverpool team. I genuinely believe we are moving in the right direction,” he told the club’s official website.
“There will be a few blips along the way like the Villa defeat, because we are a very young squad.”
Liverpool have already crashed out of the Capital One Cup, but are set to commence their FA Cup campaign this month. Besides, the Anfield outfit are also alive in the Europa League, having qualified to the Round of 32 of the competition.
Although Gerrard admitted that their prime aim was to improve on their current league standing, he revealed that they will give it their all in every competition they compete in.
“The league position needs to be improved and that needs to be our focus. But we've got games in two major cup competitions to look forward to in the second half of the season as well,” he added.
