http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 was confident that his side will be able to notch up a place in the top four this coming season, given they capitalize on their chances.
The Merseyside club concluded their 2011/12 league campaign on a disappointing eighth place in the league table – their worst showing in almost 18 years. The remedial measures which followed saw the Reds fire their manager, Kenny Dalglish and the director
of football, Damien Comolli from their respective posts.
However, despite their floundering form in the league in the preceding term, the Anfield skipper was optimistic of a much improved show from his side in this coming season, and believed that they have got what it takes to finish inside the top four.
While talking to reporters, he said: “I do think we will get in the top four. I think we will get it. I am confident we will get it. I am not being unrealistic… I think we will be high up in the table.”
The 32-year old also insisted that keeping in view the size and history of Liverpool, their eighth-place finish was totally unacceptable, and was willing to accept all the criticism that was meted out at his team.
Nonetheless, Gerrard admitted that since the Reds were going through a rebuilding process, they were not in a position to challenge for the league title, and revealed that their top target was to abridge the gap between the top teams and themselves.
The Anfield outfit appointed Brendan Rodgers as the new manager in June, in view of the Northern Irishman’s young age and his innovative coaching techniques.
When asked how he viewed the club’s decision of replacing Dalglish with the former Swansea City boss, Gerrard responded by saying that the move did not come as a surprise to him. He insisted that given the Reds dismal eighth spot last season, it was only
understandable that the owners did a bit of tinkering with the set up.
He said, “Kenny knows himself that when Liverpool finish eighth, the owners and supporters are going to ask questions. You move on with what the club wanted to do and they wanted Brendan Rodgers in.”
The midfielder then went on to say that it was important for his team to be patient in their pursuit of a Champions League berth, and felt that it was only a matter of time before they reclaim their position in the coveted European event.
