Liverpool skipper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196, was impressed by the behaviour of both sets of fans during the Reds Premier League match against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
The two giants of English football locked horns in an emotional league fixture, which witnessed the players and fans from both the sides paying their tributes to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy before kick-off.
Steven Gerrard and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985, the two skippers, released 96 balloons in the air in memory of the 96 victims, while the fans displayed the words ‘the truth’ to highlight the latest findings related to the unfortunate accident which occurred in 1989.
An independent investigation panel had cleared the names of the Liverpool fans from the incident in its recent publication last week.
Given the temperamental history of the games between the two sides, it was feared that an incident or two might occur which may mar the funereal atmosphere in the stadium.
However, both the clubs paid their respect to the victims and to the affected families in unison, with managing directors of both the sides also exchanging bouquets before the start of the game.
The Liverpool captain went into raptures about the behaviour of the fans. He felt that it was a fitting tribute for all those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough tragedy, and was also an indication that both Liverpool and United could unite for a single
cause.
“There was a lot said about supporters on both sides behaving - and credit to them both, they were fantastic,” he told the reporters.
“http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684, the fans were terrific and I don’t think there can be any complaint on that part. It was a nice touch Bobby Charlton giving the bouquet to Ian Rush and it demonstrates these two clubs can do things with unity.”
The match, which kicked off early in the afternoon, ended with the Red Devils emerging as 2-1 victors.
Gerrard opened the scoring for the home team, just after the break, which was cancelled out by Rafael only minutes later.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380 then went on to convert from a controversial penalty kick to secure all three points for his team, while further prolonging the Reds wait to grab their first league win of the season.
