The Merseyside club were forced to settle for a dismal eighth-place finish last season, following a string of poor results since the turn of the year.
Consequently, the owners moved to overhaul the entire set up, replacing former manager Kenny Dalglish with Brendan Rodgers in June, and also relieving the club’s director of football, Damien Comolli from his duties.
However, under their new boss, Liverpool have made a jittery start to the season. They were convincingly beaten 3-0 by West Bromwich Albion in the opener, and failed to hold on to the lead twice against Manchester City, to play out a 2-2 draw at Anfield
on Sunday.

Nonetheless, the 32-year old had a different say on the matter. He was of the opinion that his team have got what it takes to compete for the top honours, and their achievements in the domestic cup competitions in the previous term was a proof of that.

“I don't think we're miles away," he said.
“We have to be realistic and we finished eighth in the league last year, but we got to two major cup finals which shows that we are a good team and we can compete with anyone on our day.”
Despite remaining upbeat over the Reds chances of putting up a title winning performance, the English International was more keen on meeting their short term objectives at the moment. He indicated that he will give it his all in order fulfil his dream of
lifting the league title, but at the same time, was wary of the enormity of the task in hand.
“For me, I just take each game as it comes and hopefully before I hang my boots up I can realise the dream of winning it, but I'm also realistic as well,” he added.
