The 50-year-old tactician heaped praise on his side’s first-half performance against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede despite losing the game 3-0, while insisting that it is always difficult to secure a good result with nine men on the pitch.
In the eighth round of the Dutch top flight football, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar suffered a demoralising 3-0 defeat at the hands of FC Twente Enschede at De Grolsch Veste on Sunday, October 7.
Gertjan Verbeek, the Alkmaar outfit boss, was disappointed with the loss, but admitted that his side staged a good show in the opening 45 minutes.
“Apart from Twente’s goal, I think we can look back on a good first half”, the Dutch trainer was quoted as saying to media representatives in the post-match press conference.
FC Twente dominated proceedings at home right from the first whistle, and managed to break the deadlock in the 20th minute through Nacer Chadli. After taking the lead, the Tukkers failed to assert their authority, as the visiting side staged a
better show in the remaining action of the opening half.
However, within seven minutes of play in the second-half, the game totally tilted in favour of the Tukkers. Adam Maher was shown a straight red card for kicking an opponent, while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jozy-Altidore-c19634 was also sent to the tunnel after the American ace saw himself
booked twice in just a couple of seconds for showing dissent towards the referee.
With nine-man on the pitch, the visiting side never really managed to threaten the Enschede giants, who took full advantage of their numerical superiority.
Dusan Tadic doubled his side’s advantage in the 60th minute, when he scored from the spot, while Luc Castaignos’ strike two minutes later completed the rout.
Verbeek admitted that his never stood a chance of achieving a good result after being reduced to nine-man on the pitch.
“We knew we would have a good chance if we would stay longer in the game. But if you must go with nine men, then you know that it is difficult”, Verbeek added.
The Dutch trainer was extremely furious at both Maher and Altidore.
“Those guys are a bit stupid”, Verbeek concluded.
AZ are currently occupying the 11th spot on the league table following the defeat.
