http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar head coach, Gertjan Verbeek, has expressed his disappointment on his side’s humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of PSV Eindhoven at Philips Stadion on Sunday, September 2.
The Dutch trainer, who has been leading the Alkmaar outfit since the summer of 2010, admitted that his side played impressively after Etienne Reijnen received his marching orders in the eighth minute after the half-time break.
Tim Matavz broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, as PSV immediately took advantage of their numerical superiority. However, the Alkmaar outfit fought courageously, and managed to level the score-line in the 28th minute through Adam
Maher.
The Eindhoven giants failed to score any more goals in the remaining action of the opening 45 minutes, while AZ made couple of decent counter attacks to keep the hosts on their toes.
“We were down to ten men after just eight minutes. After Reijnen had been sent off, we were vulnerable in defence for a few minutes. Yet we were defensively well-organised again soon and started some fine counter attacks”, Verbeek was quoted as saying in
the post-match press conference.
The 50-year-old went on to acknowledge that his troops failed to put in a good display after the half-time break.
“We had been forced to dig deep in the second half and had not fully recovered yet when the second half got under way. A second PSV goal was inevitable and from then on we lacked spirit and strength of character”, Verbeek concluded.
