In the role of Gertrude present a monologue as a self-assessment of your significance in the events of the play Hamlet. Justify your actions, motives and attitudes in relations to social values (roles of women and their power) of the time.

Any ideas as to what I should write about?

  1. You might examine why Gertrude behaves as she does. When Glenn Close played her on film, she commented that Gertrude was probably fairly young herself when she married Hamlet's father and had their son. She probably didn't have a choice in marrying Hamlet's father, as most women didn't get a choice in those days. When Gertrude was left a widow, she could probably choose for the first time in her life.

That should give you something to think about.
