Gescrap Bilbao, Fenerbahce Ulker and Bennet Cantu win – Euroleague Group A Seventh week Review
During the seventh week of the Turkish Airlines Euro league, three games took place in Group C. Here is a brief review;
Gescrap Bilbao 97 - SLUC Nancy 75
Six players reached double figures as Gescrap Bilbao rejoined the Top 16 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season Group A with a 97-75 victory over SLUC Nancy on November 30 at Bilbao Arena.
Alex Mumbru led Bilbao with 15 points, four assists and three rebounds while Janis Blums and Marko Banic totalled 12 points apiece. Raul Lopez and Aaron Jackson added 11 points and five assists each while Kostas Vasiliadis ended with 10 points, five rebounds and two steals in the victory.
Nancy’s guard Jamal Shuler topped all scorers with 19 points while Adrien Moerman came off the bench with 16 points on 4 for 8 shooting from three-point range.
Gescrap shot 73 percent from two-point range and 76.6 percent from free throw line, limiting SLUC to 51.3 and 62.5 percent respectively.
Both teams started at a good pace and were tied at 22 after the first quarter. Gescrap however made early inroads in the second quarter and held a 40-35 lead before Nancy responded with four consecutive points to cut their deficit to one at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bilbao again made a push and carved out a 69-62 advantage heading into the fourth frame. Gescrap carried on with their tempo and increased the lead to 12-points, 81-69, within the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. From there on, it was a cruise.
Fenerbahce Ulker 86 - Olympiacos Piraeus 70
Cutis Jerrells came off the bench with a game-high 17 points and five assists as Fenerbahce Ulker beat Olympiacos Piraeus 86-70 on December 01 at the Sinan Erdem Arena, snapping Olympiacos’ two-game winning streak.
Roko Ukic added 16 points and grabbed three rebounds while Omer Onan chipped in with 11 points on 5 for 6 shooting from two-point range. Kyle Hines led Piraeus with 14 points and seven rebounds while Kalin Lucas finished with 13 points and three rebounds.
Fenerbahce committed just nine turnovers as compared to 17 by the Olympiacos, who also hit just 5 for 20 from downtown.
After a close defeat to Caja Laboral in the previous game, Fenerbahce were off and running from the very start and raced to a 42-36 lead at intermission. However, Olympiacos limited Ulker to 17 points in the third period and trimmed their deficit to three after 30 minutes of action. The Turks rebounded back in the fourth and widened their lead to double-digit, 70-60, early. They did not allow the Greek to come closer than six points for the rest of the game.
Bennet Cantu 71 - Caja Laboral 68
Bennet Cantu snapped their two-game losing streak with a hard-fought 71-68 victory over Caja Laboral at the Pala Desio in Cantu, Italy. Cantu have now improved to 3-4 but they are still behind Caja in the group standings.
Gianluca Basile led Cantu with 18 points on 6 for 9 shooting from downtown. Nicolas Mazzarino had 14 points while Denis Marconato grabbed game-best 10 rebounds in the victory. Mirza Teletovic headed Laboral with 27 points, shooting 5 for 9 from three-point range and 6 for 8 from free throw line while Nemanja Bjelica ended with 11 points and four steals.
Caja started strongly and were leading by 21-12 after the first 10 minutes. However, Bennet outscored Laboral 23-9 in the second quarter and converted their deficit into a five-point lead at halftime. Cantu continued to improve - limiting Caja to six points- and carried a 52-36 lead into the last quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Laboral reorganized their offense and made a great comeback, trimming their 16-point third period deficit to just one with one minute to go in the game. However, Nicolas Mazzarino hit a shot from two-point range to seal the victory for Bennet.
