I have gestational diabetes and am trying to assess if it's okay for me to eat a small tin of flavoured tuna each day with my salad?

the amount i eat has:

530kj energy

17.5g protein

6.2g fat (1.1g of which is saturated)

0.1g carbohydrate

315mg sodium

i'd be eating it with a plate filled with salad (lettuce cabbage carrot corn low fat cheese alfalfa)

do you know if there is a limit on how much fish you should include in diet?

do you know if tuna is a food containing omega 3?

  1. if your prego you cant eat tuna

  2. tuna is not a problem because of gestational diebetes. it is a problem because of the mercury levels. the carbs in the tuna is not even an issue. you shouldnt eat it everyday, but occasionaly would be ok

  3. It is absolutely ok to eat tuna.  With gestational diabetes, you want to avoid foods with empty carbs (potato chips, cakes, and other junk food items), sugary foods, etc.  Meats, cheeses, & most vegetables & fruits are also ok to eat.  Also, yes, tuna is a good source of omega 3.

  4. i was border line diabetic with my babys and still am now and i ate tuna like crazy with them. i was fine and so were my babies. you sould ask the doctor just to be on the safe side

  5. My doc only recommmended no more than one can of tuna per week because of the high mercury content. Tuna does contain Omega 3's. It is fine to eat for diabetic people as it doesn't contain sugar and has next to no carbs.

  6. Tuna wouldn't affect your GD...

HOWEVER it is extremely high in mercury.  Every doctor I've seen and resources I've checked out said no more than ONE can of white albacore tuna per WEEK.  OR  Two cans of chunk light per week.  More than that is way too much mercury in your system, especially every day!

You can get omega 3's from several other food sources... do a quick google search on it.

    Congrats and good luck
