Get Stormy won the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic to build on his turf wins' record
The American Thoroughbred race, the Turf Classic, sponsored by Woodford Reserve was captured by Get Stormy. He captured the race by three quarters of a length. The turf tracked race had a purse of $576, 000
Get Stormy won the Grade 1 race by being in the lead from the start. He maintained a soft pace and managed to capture his second consecutive Grade 1 race as jockey, Ramon Dominguez, dictated the colt through fractions of :24.97, :50.67, and 1:15.21.
The first one was when he got hold of a win in the Maker’s Mark Mile where he demonstrated a similar show of broking on top and never looking back. The race was held on April 15, 2011.
The five-year-old received little competition from Smart Bid and Doubles Partner. His resilience withered them out and he completed the 1 1/8 miles in a final time of 1:50.81.
His trainer, Tom Bushm expressed his feelings by saying it is a “dream scenario”.
He also said, “I think he’s probably a better horse than he was at four. These are two big, big races that he won. Hopefully, there are more ahead”.
His next words confirm his pride about the win. “I am running out of amazing things to say about him”.
He also said, “When he was a 3-year-old and came to the barn he looked like a piece of spaghetti, He was a leggy little narrow-chested, light little thing. This horse changed dramatically from the end of his 3-year-old year into his 4-year-old year”.
The race is the final event on the Churchill card prior to the Kentucky Derby. With the speed front runner, Little Mike, scratched, Get Stormy established an early pace.
He opened up by two lengths over Smart Bid and Rahystrada. The colt inched away to a clear lead in the upper stretch and maintained the lead as per the instruction given by his jockey.
His trainer has not yet selected another start for Get Stormy. He finished eleventh in the Breeder’s Cup Mile. This was the five-year-old’s tenth win from 22 career starts.
He also has the honour of winning the Fourstardave and Bernard Baruch handicaps.
Both the races were held at Saratoga in 2010.
He has also won the Common Wealth Turf held on November 15, 2009, while his reins were held by Javier Castellano.
By attaining his second win in three starts on Churchill Turf he has earned the reputation of being a turf champion.
His bank roll is a staggering $1,128,083. He is out of the unplaced Kiri’s Clown mare, Foolish Gal. He was bred by Mary Sullivan and owned by Sullimar Stables.
Smart Bid came in second. He was ridden by Edgar S. Prado and finished a neck ahead Doubles Partner, who came in third. With Rahystrada coming in fourth, Prince Will I Am, the favourite finished fifth.
