Question:

Get a CRT?

I've noticed a flat 38-inch RCA CRT HDTV (F38310) up for grabs. It was manufactured in 2001. It is available used for $175. I know there are different schools of thought about this -- but am I better off sticking with CRT in light of projection, plasma, LCD, etc.?

And if I get it, what is a definitive way to get it calibrated?

  1. CRTs actually have a better picture than lcds and most plasmas (newer plasmas excluded). They have a much better viewing angle than LCDs. They stopped making them because of the size and weight as consumers started buying larger flat panel tvs. The tv is cable ready so you'll need a cable box to see hd (720p) signals. Also, it has no hdmi input so you'll need to use comopnent cables (the red, green, and blue ones). The price seems right so if your not really into televisions, I'd go for it. To calibrate any tv, use the Avia

Thhis disk will also help you setup surround sound

  2. CRT's have a shorter life, narrower viewing angle and altogether not as good a picture as an LCD or Plasma.  Think for the long term and go for one of the latter.

  3. Whoever said that CRT has a better picture is crazy, they are way more reliable though (thus negating another point).  Here's my thought.  A $37 inch projection is going to run you a minimum of $800, do you have this kind of money?  The CRT HDTV's are GIGANTIC also!  Also, it probably isn't even a 720p for that year, thus pic won't be that great.  Finally, RCA's kinda blow.
