Hey I was just researching schools to go to for graduate school. I'm seeing a lot of advertisements for online schools...Would someone even hire me with a Masters or Psy. D or PhD in Psychology (Clinical or Counseling)?

  1. I don't know; I'm a psych professor and we tend to be very skeptical of online degrees. A lot of online programs don't give you real training or advising.  I think it's a safer bet to get a traditional degree.

  2. May this site can help you

    http://www.sgpak.com

  3. You will find many negative comments and criticisms of Capella University, a for-profit on-line school, on the Capella Facts web site - http://www.capellafacts.org/capella_univ...

  4. If I'm not mistaken, currently the requirement is Masters, but in the near future I think it will be PsyD. Psychologists and psychiatrists have a disagreement going on. Of course that depends what type of psychologist you want to be. "In almost all states, a license to practice clinical psychology requires a doctorate. Most clinical psychologists have a Ph.D., some have an Ed.D., and a small but growing number have a PsyD" (Invitation to Pscyhology, Carole Wade and Carol Tavris, p. 9, 1999). "Psychiatrists and clinical psychologists do similar work, but psychiatrists, because of their medical training, tend to focus on biological problems with medications (p. 10). Currently psychologists can't write prescriptions. "Psychiatrists, however, are often untrained in psychological theories and methods (p. 10). "Many research psychologists are worried about an increase in poorly trained psychotherapists across America" (p. 10, taken from Robyn M. Dawes, 1994, and Debra A. Poole, 1995). "Many of these therapists are unschooled in research methods and the empirical findings of psychology, and they are therapy techniques that have not been tested and validated" (p. 10). Needless to say, the different schools of psychology have different approaches from each other and from psychiatry. Decide what you want to do and pursue it, always keeping an eye on the changing landscape of your field.
