i live on west coast of florida..if it's not a snake what is it?

Many snakes are differently colored as juveniles than as adults. But one (very predominant) black snake in your area is the Black Racer. There are many sub-species of Racer snakes. Try searching the Everglades Racer or Southern Black Racer.

What is very possible is that you saw what is known as a Flowerpot Snake. It looks like a black worm, but is actually a snake from Asia that has been brought over in tropical plants.
