  1. It's not only how much you train but how well you train as well.  If you've got access to your own bag, then you could go for 30 mins a day.  But you also need to focus on technique, otherwise all you'll be doing is burning calories, not getting better at boxing.

You're better off joining a proper gym, but if you want to practise at home, you could get a Slam Man.  It's a human shaped electronic punching bag with targets that light up which tell you where to punch.

It's better than an ordinary punching bag as it can provide combinations for you and it's much better for motivation because it's more fun.  It basically acts as your very own boxing trainer.

I've got one of my own and it comes with gloves and an instructional DVD in the basics.  A human shaped target provides a more realistic training regime as well.

  2. How often?  How much better do you want to get?  The more you use it, the right way, the more you improve.  What do you do with it?  You punch it.  What kind of punch?  Well, you didn't say what kind of bag it is.  If it's a speed bag, practice jabs to the head.  If it's a heavy bag, practice body shots.   If you really want to get good, though, you'll need access to both kinds.  You also need to do a lot of cardio training.  If you're not trying to compete in matches, you probably don't want to join a gym, so you might need to watch some videos about how to hit the bag.  Above all, do something, right or wrong, because at the very least, you will help your general conditioning, which is good for life.

  3. You can't get better by training yourself. teaching yourself means teaching yourself the wrong way and developing a lot of bad habits which can lead to injury. If you want to learn how to box even if you don't want to spar or compete you should go to a boxing gym.

  5. As one who coached and trained Amateur Boxers for 19 years' i'll tell you now what your planning on doing will more than likely get you hurt.First of all a heavy bag is used to help develope correct punching form and with out some one there to guide you and watch you your asking for trouble in correct form and possible injuries. But if your going to insist on hitting it on your own be sure your hands are wrapped tight and quality bag gloves are worn and in your case i'd suspect no more than 15-30 minutes a evening should be ok....
