Question:

Get my parents to buy me a car?! TEN POINTS?

I found this amazing car for $1000. It runs, and only needs a bit of work. It's pretty old but it's a MERCEDES BENZ. It looks just like that car from James Bond. Sooo amazing.. I think I'm in love.

However, they are rather dubious about buying me a car. It's not exactly a sports car, but they want something a little more practical. They're afraid it will break down all the time.

What can I do to convince them I really need a car? Taking an hour bus ride is not fun at all

  1. Listen to your parents, they've been there and done that. You might very well need a car, but an old Mercedes isn't it. First off, it is EXACTLY a sports car,  and you do need something much more practical. For this car to be only  $1000, it needs much more than a little work and I seriously doubt that it is very safe at all. Besides, it's a Mercedes, how much do you think a car like that costs to get fixed, even a little bit? Probably much more than the car is worth. Then, there is the whole insurance thing too. I'm assuming you're a teenager, seeing how you're asking your parents to purchase this car. I also assume that they will be the ones paying your insurance. Do you have any idea how much the insurance will cost for that type of car, that is that old, with a driver your age will cost? If your parents have a brain cell between them, they will not buy this car for you. Set your sites on something more practical and realistic. After all, how many teenagers do you see driving around an old as s Mercedes??

  2. tell them its for your safety because riding the bus can be dangerous....especially at night. and you said you ride the bus for an hour.....UGH! i hate the bus rides in my city....good luck!

  3. To me, it sounds like you do need a car, and you are right that $1,000 is a reasonable amount for a used car these days. Someone knowledgeable in cars would have to take a good look at it, though. You wouldn't want to get stuck with a money-sucking lemon, no matter how nice it looks on the outside.

I think that if you are maintaining good grades, are working a part-time job, you don't get into trouble or give your parents any grief, you are a cautious and safe driver, and you are spending a lot of time on public transportation, you deserve a car.

  4. The fact of the matter is an older Mercedes Benz that needs a bit of work is a concern. Mercedes Benz are not cheap to fix. You may buy the car for $1000, but may turn around and put another $1000 in work into the car.

Assuming this is your first car, i can understand your parent's wanting you having a more practical  car. Thry want to ensure the car is in good shape and you don't break down in the middle of the night. It's more of a safety concern for you parents more that anything.

If you get htis car, maybe you can take some classes to learn to fix it up yourself.

Convice your parents you can compromise on a car you both agree on and you might get lucky.

    Good luck to you.

  5. ok the hard part is not in convincing them you need a car. needing the car you want, thats difficult

i personally managed to get a car out of my parents without ever asking for one. i made them think it was their idea. i never asked, not once. I personally thought it was some of my best work.

    it does require some finesse

-let them how much easier their life would be if you had a car. make them drive you stupid places. miss the bus. get rides from friends with cars.

-convey to them that your academic output would be greatly enhanced by having a car

-drop hints about the unsafety of the bus, its inconvenience,  for example, i managed to tell my parents (without every saying so outright) that if i had a car, i could leave for school an hour and a half later than if i took the bus. more sleep for me - better mood, better grades, happy happy.

-make them see how easy it is for your friends with cars, and your friends with cars parents.

remember finesse. it is THEIR brilliant idea. not yours. all of the above must be accomplished with the utmost tact. no saying anything outright. make them see, discuss your friends. never say it explicitly.

as for getting your hands on the benz, someone else is gonna have to help with that.

    good luck

  6. Everyone needs a car and for a 1,000 bucks you cant beat it .. I am sure it will have problems all used cars do .. but dont even bring that up to your parents . tell them that you will repay them a.s.a.p. and that you love them just give them a sad face and act like the people on the bus are starting to scare you and you are doing this for safety also

  7. you convince your parents by going out getting a job and save a thousand dollars

  8. i think you should get a job to show them that you are responsible and make a deal to pay at least half of the price (or just chip in) then it will most likely work out for you.

    hope i helped

  9. Benz is not a car for a beginner. Number 1, they are costly for repairs. Number 2, price of fuel is not cheap. Get a Saturn, like a 1999 or 2000 that gets 42 mpg and are cheap on repairs. Sideline the Benz idea.

  10. Unless you have a job that you absolutely need to commute to, I doubt anyone really NEEDS a car. I mean what's wrong with public transportation/carpooling? But rant aside, you can just ask them for a loan with a promise that you'll get a job to pay it off. Parents always appreciate seeing their kids willing to work for what they want.

It's what I told my friend and he got his car that way.

Although it was kind of a waste since he rides his bike everywhere now due to gas prices =/

  11. Make sure you are old enough to drive. Sounds silly (very silly), but someone under 16 doesn't need a car.

Drop hints that you need a car. Say things that imply you need a car.

Make a big deal of calling someone else for a ride.

    Nag your parents for rides.

Eventually, your parents will realize that you need a car.

    Make them feel guilty

Help around the house without being asked

  12. Tell them if you do not recieve the car within 48 hours you will form a revolution of mercenarys and take over the whitehouse and make it a law than parents must buy their children a car which costs over the sum of $1000 or they will be forced to dress up as giant banana's and dance to the YMCA in public for a week.

  13. GET A JOB AND BUY  IT YOURSELF

  14. Be good. And obedient. Make sure they know how much you want it. Not through whinning or being spoilt but by proving to them what a good thing it will be when they get it for you.

If they're the 'education is gold' type then make up a little presentation with pie charts and information which will go right over they're heads. May sound lame noe but believe it or not, that has worked many times.

Show them the car, let them have a look at it.

And show them you are responsible enough to have that car. It's all about proving yourself and the new love of your life to your parents. It may not happen tomorrow but if you keep on at them, you'll have that car in no time. Good luck!
