Get my therapist to reccomend homeschooling?

Hi everyone!

Well I have severe anxiety and today had an appointment to get a therapist. In the next week or so we should be getting a call from the girl. My mom said she would let me homeschool if my therapist says its ok...because my mom doesn't know how bad my anxiety is and doesn't want to decide on her own. Does anyone have tips on how to let my new therapist know that homeschooling is very important to me and I really think that's what I should do?

Thanks!

  1. Talk to her!  Be blunt with her. Tell her that you really want to homeschool and that you think it would be beneficial for you and that your mom says that it is o.k. if she refers you to. Ask your therapist her opinion, what she sees the pros and cons are and really talk about it. Let her know all the reasons you really want to homeschool.   o.k.

  2. Depends on the type of anxiety. I know of kids who were in school and suffering badly from the stress of it who ended up doing much better at home.

However, do be warned: many therapists don't know diddly about homeschooling and won't recommend it because they really are ignorant about it and think it's a bad idea. You might have better luck contacting homeschooling groups in your area and finding out if any parents have dealt with kids who have anxiety and pulled them out of school to homeschool. They may be better able to convince your mom than the therapist.

Also, take this time before your appointment to find out ALL you can about homeschooling and the benefit of it, pass this information on to your mom.

  3. My daughter has a severe anxiety disorder and due that we are homeschooling.  She is an advanced student and does well with her studies, but the stress of school was disruptive to her mental state.  Are you seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist for your condition?  Have you been diagnosed?  To what degree is your anxiety?  If you have anxiety to the point of where you need to be homeschooled, then hopefully you will seek treatment with a psychiatrist (if you've not already).  My child's doctors (both psychiatrist and psychologist) agree that homeschooling is the better choice for my child with her current condition.   Just tell the truth and let the professionals help you.

  4. i never had anxiety in school but i did have learning disabilities (adhd i think). i never actually got tested but i know i have it. anyways there are online classes and such that you can take instead of school.

  5. Really listen to your therapist.  They have loads of experience with these issues.  I suffered with severe anxiety for 8 years and now, looking back, the best thing for me was to confront the problem and mix with people.  Seclusion was bad for me.  Just listen to your therapist and good luck..

  6. Severe anxiety about what? Many students opt for homeschooling because it seems to be easier than formal schooling. It would be easier to answer if we knew what was causing you all this anxiety.
