  1. The above answer was great, but in addendum, you don't need to spend $600 on an a/v receiver, you can buy a quality pioneer/kenwood/sony a/v receiver for under $200 and (maybe less!) and receive great sound from your technics speakers. Even panasonic the parent of technics has inexpensive receivers. And you don't need to connect surround sound to a surround receiver, they'll run in stereo just fine.

  2. Sorry to answer with bad news, but you're going to need an amplifier of some sort.

Typically, TVs have sound output only at 'line level', in simple words, a signal which still requires amplifiers to make it heard. This is why 'active' speakers are used with computers/laptops, because the take the line level signal, and amplify it (the amp is inside the speaker unit).

The TV has an amplifier, but it is connected only to the speakers in the TV.

Your Technics speakers therefore require an amplifier - to boost signal to the point at which it is powerful enough to drive the physical speakers and make sound.

So, the only thing you can do is use some form of external amplifier.

On the bright side, if you're only talking about front (L + R stereo) speakers, an old second hand amp will do, unless you want to go for full home theatre, you won't need an AV receiver.

I bought one off an auction site for a few bucks to get a better sound out of a second TV in another room (I had a set of old B&W speakers sitting around). It's not costly, and will give you heaps better sound quality than what comes out of the TV speakers currently.

    All the best.
