Getting A New Start???

I am a 16 year old boy. I will be graduating from High school this year. When I was little my parents physically and verbally abused me. As a result of that I spent most my childhood with depression. I even tried to kill my self at several points in time. My mom still does nothing but yell and cuss and tell me I am horrible. However I am no longer depressed and want a new start. Now that I am graduating early I want to move out on my own. What do I need to do to get emancipated. Also can a person who is going to college still live on their own and afford a place in L.A. Also does anyone have any suggestions that could help me with anything I might run into

  2. Man, I'm really sorry to hear you've come up hard.  I can sympathize.

Moving out on your own at 16 is a tough proposition.  You'll have to get an emancipation declaration from a judge, and you'll have to make a good case for yourself to get that (the facts; no whining).  Here's the California Superior Court link for information:

That you're graduating early will be a big plus for you.  You may be eligible for financial aid to go on to university early - ask your guidance counselor at school, or get started looking for a college and go talk to the Financial Aid office there.  See what kind of grants are available to you...  Ultimately you'll need a good education to get a good job.

Meanwhile, you'll need a job.  Yeah there's always flipping burgers but you'll not get any more than minimum wage for it.  Have you got any ideas what you'd like to do professionally?  See if you can get a job that actually fits with your goals and aspirations.

Trust your own sense of what's right and what's wrong.  There's an upper limit to how well scoundrels do in this world and that limit is pretty low.  Don't fall in with the wrong crowd or buy into 'Get Rich Quick' schemes.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You can endure almost anything, even grinding poverty, for a short time.  The trick is to have a vision and always work toward it.  Save your money; invest if you can.  Have a plan for where you want to be by the time you're 25.

Remember - you won't win anyone over by declaring you're running away from something.  What will get folks on board with helping you is showing that you have bigger dreams and are wanting to run TO something.

    Good luck!

  3. You should talk to the guidance counselor at your school. He/she will really be able to guide you in the right direction.
