Question:

Getting Faster and General Rugby?

by  |  earlier

I recently joined rugby, and I love it. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on building up my speed? I also was wondering if anyone had any ideas on ways that I could work on my own (since everyone has really busy schedules) to improve on my skills. I'm not really a great tackler. We have our first game this weekend and I'm pretty sure I'm starting out as a sub. I just want to get better so I can play more. I love the game and I'm willing to give it everything!

  1. To increase speed, it's best to run "dash" drills.  You can do it by getting on a track or or road, run for 200 yds then "sprint" for 100yds, run 200, sprint 100.   Squats with weights are good for leg strength incl. calves, things, buttocks etc....which are the Key muscles for "speed".

As for tackling, this is almost psychological.  You have to think mean and get mean...throw yourself at the opponent literally and aim for waist/legs to throw them off balance i.e. to the ground.

  2. Every rugby team have their own fitness regimes and their own fitness team. Best is to get your training programme from them. It needs to suit your body type as well.

  3. always wrap the legs....dont miss tackles like football platers

  4. Yeah too true.

When your tackling you should aim for a couple of spots.

    Just under the sternum/pecks.

At the waist and the ankles.

If you wanna impress do an ankle tap when an opposition player make a break.

    All about timing that one.
