Question:

Getting Internet without a phoneline for a router, or a plug in connection?

Hi, I will be moving into new student accommodation where we are not allowed to make calls or get a broadband connection via the phoneline. I was wondering if there are any other means for getting internet onto my laptop without the need for plugging something into a phoneline? I will be in central London where network coverage SHOULD be high, using programs such as skype, but not any huge downloading of files/songs etc. If anyone could help that would be great!

  1. you need to look for a wifi hotspot.

Maybe there is one provided by your uni.

If not search for open connections and maybe get an antenna for your laptop.

  2. Phone Companies now do 3G intenets were you just plug in a usb stick/modem and go - literally. I suggest these.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Go for mobile broadband.  You will need what is sometimes called a "dongle" which is a small device to plug into a USB port which links to a mobile phone network at typically £15 per month.  You can get a connection via the 3G mobile network anywhere their is coverage which should be very adequate for the use you describe.  My wife and I have a contract with Vodafone which from our research seemed the best provider and we are very pleased with it.

  4. The mobile phone company 3 have started a mobile broadband kit for your PC, it is basically a item that plugs into your computer and connects to the 3 servers and lets you browse the internet, depending on signal will obviously concern the speed of the broadband, but it is quite fast. You can pay for a contract or even PAYG which can be pretty useful.

Check out their website for more information: www.three.com

  5. Get cable internet... no phoneline required.

  6. Well since you can't use the phone line, I doubt you can use dial-up or DSL, and if you can't use phone lines, I am guessing you can't use any cable lines either.

You basically cut your options down too one, maybe two. The main thing you can do is go to your cell phone companies in your area (T-Mobile? I am not up on my cellular companies in Europe), and get a mobile broadband adapter or card from them. It will cost you some money though, and will likely have a 5GB or less monthly allowance. But you will have internet. That unfortunately maybe your only option.

Unless.... you are allowed to get Powerline broadband if it is in your area. I know the UK has that in some areas, so you maybe able to get that. I would recommend you do research on that if you are interested. Although it is likely you will have to go with cellular broadband.

  7. If you go to a mobile phone provider (such as O2), you can get mobile broadband. you get something like a memory stick that you plug into your laptop. Mine is rather slow, but it works!

  8. Whats the point of having a phone line that yor not allowed to make calls with? it just seems pointless. Best solution os to get T-Mobile mobile broadband or a cable connection.
