Question:

Getting Jerusalem Artichoke for my Garden?

Can I just buy them from the supermarket to plant in a new garden bed? I am assuming the answer is no. If so, can anyone point me to an online store that I can order them from? What am I buying?? Just part of the root??

Also, when i harvest them and take out the roots, will they continue to grow year over year even though I am taking out the roots?

Thank you!!

  1. You could buy a couple of roots at the supermarket, put them in a damp paper towel for a few days and see if they sprout. If they do, you're in business. While you're waiting, you can google Park Seed in Greenwood SC, get organized to order some from them if yours don't show signs of sprouting in 5 days.

Oh yes once you plant those babies they will continue to multiply no matter how many you take out.

  2. Purchase the chokes put tooth picks in the sides to support them. place one in a cup of water so that half the root is submerged. Aflter about a month it will root and a stem with leaf will emerge. When it gets some size you can plant it out.  They can be hard to get rid of. They multiply very well. havest in the fall. Put some large ones back in the soil for next year.

  3. The answer isn't "no" - but it's "maybe".  Ginger root will almost ALWAYS grow for me.  I assume jerusalem artichokes are similar.  The exception would be if they had been irradiated before arriving at the grocery.  In which case, they won't grow.

And yes - they are a perennial plant, and will make a bigger and bigger patch each year. (As long as you leave some roots for the next year)

  4. well theres places where you can buy them and just plant them it just depends where you live.... just try to find a garding store/nurser im sure they sell them
