Question:

Getting My First Moped?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

Im seriously considering buying my first moped.

Ive never rode one before and I know pretty much nothing about the laws and regulations around them.

Im 18, and I plan to send off for my provisional license in the next few weeks.

Can you tell me any important or useful or value information that you feel I may benefit from knowing about them?

What costs are involved?

What are the main laws?

  1. 'Moped' has a specific legal definition - a two-wheeled vehicle, with an engine of less than 50cc capacity.

There is frequent confusion between 'moped' and 'scooter'.  Scooters range from 50cc up to 600cc and refer only to a style.

All mopeds are less than 50cc, regardless of whether they are scooters, trails mopeds, sports mopeds, custom mopeds, or whatever.

  2. Just book & take your CBT: That'll be more use than anything anyone can tell you here.

  3. the legal deffanitionn of a moped is a any bike/scooter that is 50cc and restricted to 30mph...a 125 ''moped'' is classedas a scooter...once you pass a cbt [aprox £80] your old enough to ride a 125 bike/scooter

    MOPED

1)A moped has a maximum design speed not exceeding 50 km/h (approx. 31 mph). It has an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc

You can only hold a provisional moped licence if you are at least 16 years old. It entitles you to ride a moped on the road as a learner with L-plates (D-plates in Wales) but you must not carry a pillion passenger or go on a motorway.

YOU MUST FIRST PASS THE THEORY TEST THEN YOU CAN APPLY FOR CBT TEST

Your provisional licence is only valid when you have the DL 196 certificate issued on completion of compulsory basic training (CBT) by an approved training body (ATB).

A CBT certificate obtained on a moped is also valid for motorcycles once the rider has reached the age of 17 years and has the necessary licence.

If you want to ride a moped on the road without displaying L-plates you must take and pass a theory and practical driving test.
