  1. Mainly good answers, if you are in a cabled area try Virgin, com they have good broadband and digital TV as well as phone.    I got mine for NOTHING.

  2. if you have a phone socket plug in a phone to see if you get a dial tone. if someone moves out BT used to leave the line working for a short time. if not, call BT and ask them about it.

  3. If there is a socket for a phone, try a phone in it to see if it works. If it does, don't use it, just dial 100 and ask them to put the line in your name.  If you use the phone (and they can tell if you do) they will then try to lump the last bill for that phone onto you.

If this is the first phone line that you have had they may ask for a small deposit (I had to pay £50 about 18 months ago) and this comes off your first bill.  On saying that I had broadband as well as a land line.  There was no connection fee.

If there is no socket and one has to be installed there may be a charge, but my friend negotiated this saying that she was on JSA and needed a line to help get a job. BT were really helpful to her.  Give it a try.

PS My friend and me are in a limited income and BT gave us a payment card so that we can pay over the quarter and therefore not receive hefty bills.  There is no charge for this service.

  4. as above, if you have to get one installed bt rip you off for 125 quid for half hours work!, when i moved house there was already 1 in and they tried to cahrge me another 125 just to get it live! tell them you'll go else where then they normally let the charge go

  5. call your local provider give them the location and their tech support will tell you
