Question:

Getting Putter Fitted?

Right now, I have a 35" putter, and I probably need a 33"or 32". I usually choke down all the way to the end of the grip. Is it worth it to get it cut down? Thx.

  1. It is worth it, the thicker the grip is the less wristy your stroke will be and your grip is thicker at the top.

  2. It really isn't all that worth it, unless your bothered by choking down on it.  If choking down is affecting your putting then do it, if not I would say don't.  Putting is the most unconventional part of golf, you could stand on your head and putt as long as they went in.  Plus. if you are ever planning on selling the putter in the future, it is best that it be a standard length.

  3. My suggestion is to go to a golf store and look the same putter or one similar to it in 33" or 32" and just test it there. If you like it and you putt better, then get them to shorten the length of your putter. You'll need to get them to add weight into the clubhead to maintain the swingweight and feel. If they can't add weight to it, then you can used lead tape to make up the lost weight. Also - when you cut the shaft the diameter of the shaft at the top gets smaller, so when they (at the golf shop) put on the grip, you might need to get them to put an extra layer of tape to keep the grip size the same. There shouldn't be much of a difference (without the extra tape) though.

  4. Cutting it down 3" will make a pretty dramatic change in the swing weight, which may adversely effect your stroke. I wouldn't take more than an inch off of it.

  5. Absolutely. Here's a thought, Mickelson is a 6'3" guy, uses a 33" putter. My putting improved a LOT when I cut mine down from 35 to 32.....make the move.

  6. It will change the weight and overall balance point of the club so it might not feel the same if you cut it down.  You didn't say if you make a lot of putts or if you are struggling.  Usually people I see choking way down aren't such good putters and they are trying to control the clubhead better because their mechanics aren't so good.  But if you are holing most of them just stick with choking up.
