Question:

Getting US cigarettes into Mexico?

I am going to be in Cabo for 6 months via the Tijuana crossing point. I'm not too fond of Mexican cigarettes and want to bring in some American cigarettes. I realize there is a 2 carton maximum and also realize that they can confiscate them; levy penalties (up to 4 times the price of the smokes); even impound my car. With all that in mind, does anyone have any experience in this matter. Has anyone out there gotten "busted" for trying to bring in more than the alotted amount? If they do discover my 20 or so cartons, what can I REALLY expect to happen? Any and all advise will be greatly appreciated!

  1. You could have a friend mail them to you in small quantities.

I had assumed that the Senate bill had passed making the mailing of cigarettes illegal; I was mistaken.  It has not yet gone to a vote:   http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd...

  2. just buy cigarretes in mexico are the same thing.. marlboro is marlboro all over the world, camels are camels in mexico or germany, who cares.. besides in mexico are cheaper...

  3. They'll probably think you'll try to sell them.

  4. The deal is this:

According to the customs law, you can bring 2 cartons, as you say. If you do not declare them in the Customs Post 30 Km from the border (if you're driving) or in the Customs checkpoint at the airport, if you are lucky enough, your extra cartons will go unadvertised. If you're subject to inspection then you will have to:  surrender your cartons to the customs agents and if they're not corrupt, then pay a fine OR pay a bribe if they suggest it and let you go with your extra cartons.  Now, what is the need to take all those cartons, you could buy them cheaper in Mexico!!!! Best of luck.
