Getting Wisdom Teeth Removed...

Question

Okay, so im fifteen and Im getting my wisdom teeth removed. Im not too worried (I mostly hate the whole IV part) but I have seen that a lot of people are quite dramatic about it. And Iv seen people on Y!A Answers say stuff like prepare for pain and stuff. So I have to ask. Is it really that painful? Does it vary? What are your experiences with it? Plus, mine are impacted so I heard it will hurt more... I guess I dont care but Im just curious. Thanks in advance =D

A lot of people in my family had their wisdom teeth removed because they don't have room for them in their mouth. If that's the case, and yours are as impacted, then it may be a bit painful for a while after. No, I don't mean to scare you, but I do want you to be prepared! Here are a couple tips:

Try asking if they have any type anesthesia that they can give you. I don't mean the "put to sleep" kind, I mean something that would hold the pain a little. I have to get something removed on my gums soon, and there is a special type of gel that they can rub on your gums so that they become completely numb. I tried the numbing gel just to see what it felt like, and I couldn't feel anything! Also note that for most dentists, they ask you how it feels first with a tool. For example, mine would put the numbing gel on a couple times and then poke me with something asking me if I can feel it. If so, he keeps putting more on until I'm comfortable with how it feels.

I wouldn't recommend just sitting there like..."Okay, is he going to do it now? Or....NOW? Wait...now?" Believe it or not, it's a lot more painful if you're expecting something (NOT if you're prepared--they're two different things). Try to take your mind off of it by bringing something to entertain you. Do you have an iPod? Close your eyes and listen to some relaxing music. Try not to open your eyes or "peek" to see what he's doing. It might make you more nervous.

Also do not scream, move, or squirm while the tools are in your mouth. This could lead to a big mistake--imagine having him pull the wrong tooth! Ouch!

BEFORE I FORGET!!

Don't eat ANYTHING hard after you get them removed. This could irritate your gums and lead to..yes, you guessed it. More pain. Ask your dentist if you can have them at a different time--for example, the 2 right and then a month or so later the 2 left. This gives some time for the gums to heal. And plus, if you have all of them removed at the same time, you won't be able to chew!

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed in day surgery.

It was the most painfull experience of my life.

I was in extreme pain for 2 weeks, unable to eat or drink i basically just took sleeping pills and slept for 2 weeks.

I had a lot of swelling as well.

My sister had all 4 of her wisdom teeth removed after me and she was eating shortly after the surgery and had very little pain controlled by only panadol.

You can ask for the smallest needle, (they have one that I get all the time that looks like a butterfly and its so tiny that it is practically painless-->they use it on me when they draw blood and it can be used on you for the IV drip).

Impacted means that the roots are curved in some way and they have to 'bust' them out a lot of times, or dig them out and yes, it  'IS' going to be sore afterwards, but they can give you an ice pack to put on your cheek to help stop the bleeding, (they already will have gauze packing inserted in the 'holes' that they make to help staunch the bleeding also, but cold helps shrink the veins that make you bleed).

You can get pain medicine if you request it, as most Dentist 'know' that its painful as all...to some, and less to others, it depends on your ability to stand the pain.

Since your only 15, your going to be more susecptable to pain then someone my age 52, because our 'receptors' are not as active and deaden over the years, while yours are still 'fresh and new' and are more alive to stimulus.

You will either be an out patient, or, unless you have a drop in blood pressure (as I sometimes do), with the anestetics, they may keep you one day in the hospital.  Or, they may even just do it at the dentist office, but, its ususally done in the hospital for cases of emergencies.

My experience years ago included:

Two valium, one a couple hours before the procedure, one right before the procedure;

A large dosage of pain killer - don't remember which one - before the procedure;

Multiple pokes with a local anasthetic;

Nitrous Oxide throughout the procedure;

Five days worth of Codeine pain killers after the procedure.

As you can see, I don't actually RECALL the procedure. I was high as a kite for a week.

Actually, I do recall a lot of pulling, burnt tooth smell, chipping and rinsing. My jaw was intolerably painful for a couple of days and I had to keep cotton on the open sockets where the teeth had been, and rinse them regularly with a special syringe.

After a week, the pain was gone but there was some aching.

I think looking back and having talked to a lot of people about the experience, the biggest thing was I had all four done at once. Some people had two procedures done when they could have had all four removed at the same time, and that doesn't make a l**k of sense to me.

Other people also said they got a couple day's worth of painkillers and no relaxant or anti-anxiety drugs for the procedure, i.e. no Valium. Don't know why they would do that.

It sounds like they plan to knock you out, which was another way I've heard of it being done. Or possibly they'll give you a Valium drip. Either way, the procedure should be non-existent to you if you're well medicated going into the situation.

But, as to the meds, I also became addicted to the codeine and had a hard time coming off of it. I was in college and did this over Spring Break and d**n near killed my roommate. He ended up moving out a few weeks later because I was such a jerk.

It is more than painful. You will bleed from the mouth for days. Not only that, but you end up looking like a chipmunk for a week, out of all the swollen-ness. I mean, it could just be me, but i wasn't put under when I got my four removed.

I had all 4 removed.  It's just long and tedious.  There isn't much pain because they give you Novocain (not an IV).  My jaw hurt from keeping it open that long but I just asked for a break.  "Can I please just close my mouth for a minute please?"  Afterwards, my face was swollen for a couple of days and my jaw was sore but they give you painkillers for that.  I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to eat a burger for like two weeks.  Because your teeth are impacted they will have to break the tooth to remove it.  All you will feel is pressure and nothing more.  Don't listen to all these other people who describe all this pain and bleeding.  It's just not true.

I had mine taken out last summer and mine were impacted as well.

I had no pain during the surgery but after i did have a lot of pain

it could be different for different people

just make sure you listen to what the doctor tells you to do.
