I applied to my local community college. I have a assesment test coming up. I really want my GED since i am a high school drop out. How does the college help you get it. Do they just give you books and tell you to go home and study it yourself and come back for the test, Or will they help and give me classes to prep for it?

  1. The assessment test is VERY important and it is not something that you can really study for. The assessment test is to determine what level your basic knowledge is. It will test you on math skills, basic grammar and sentence structure.

As far as the GED, if you are able to score high enough, then you may be able to take other courses as well as remedial English, and Math.

And you may be able to get financial aid.

Remember, if you can get your GED your opportunities in life will be wider -- in other words it opens new horizons for better paid jobs. But not necessarily. Some are good with their hands and some are better with book learning. No judgment meant at all here.

It is not the end of the world either way. Just do the best you can and make a promise to yourself that you are going to get to the next level. Do it for your family, your girlfriend, any children you may have and especially FOR YOU.

After you take the assessment test you will get a full explanation about what the school can do for you.

  2. Why don't you ask someone at the college?

Most GED programs are run through local Boards of Education.
