Question:

Getting a Job?

I will be graduating soon and apparently gotta look for a job.

One thing I am concerned about is that I have a mental disorder(mood-swing). Do I need to tell them I have a disability? Is it going to block me from getting a job?

I know that they are not going to ask me the question whether I have a disability unless I mention it first and they wouldnt be able to tell if I have a mood-swing because I am taking on meds. Would it have a bad impression on them to hire me? I am aware that people with disabilities are protected by American Disability of Act under the law.

  1. I have the same thing, but would NEVER disclose it to a potential employer. It is extremely difficult to prove someone has discriminated against you for a mental illness during the hiring process.

My experience has told me that potential employers and coworkers are very afraid of persons who have bipolar disorder; they are under the impression that we are dangerous, regardless of how effective medication is, or how long it's been since our last episode.

My advice is to keep it to yourself. Your medical history and records are private.

  2. No, don't tell them.  You're under no legal or moral obligation to do so.  They aren't allowed to ask, as you know, and the other side of that coin is that you don't have to tell.  The only thing that's their business is whether and how well you can do the job.

Of course it would be illegal for them to discriminate against you, but even assuming that they wouldn't do that, there is at least one other reason:

People do have prejudices and expectations of people, based on all sorts of qualities.  You don't need to suffer for that, even if they think they're hiding it.  You have the opportunity to start with a fresh slate and go in and do as good a job as you're able.

  3. If your disability is under control with medication at this point, I would not tell them about it on an interview. Once you have the job, and if you are having trouble regulating your medication or you feel it might be a problem, this would be the time to mention that you have this disability. They need to be aware of the cause of any changes in attitude or actions while you are working. I know you are not legally required to tell them you have a disability as long as it does not affect your ability to perform your job.
