Question:

Getting a UK passport for my daughter?

I am English/English ( My roots go back to the Midlands 17century)

I have a UK passport. My daughter is 7 years old and has a French passport ( from her mother) We're not married but I officially recognised my daughter here in Spain when she was born...But not with the UK embassy...too much to do at the time.

Question... Are the steps to give my daughter a UK passport still as complicated as 7 years ago ( married , not married?) and roughly how much will it cost me? thanks in advance.

  1. If you were born outside the UK, even if you hold a British passport, the answer is no (my daughter was born in France and has British nationality through me; my granddaughter, also born in France, does not have the right).  A British-born woman can pass her nationality on to her child born outside the UK.  It's more complicated for a British-born father who is not married to the (non-British) mother.  The following website gives a short explanation: www.plsimon.co.uk/citizenship.html.

I would advise you to contact the consulate in Madrid.

Additional information: Goddess is correct, only one parent needs to be British.  However, that parent must be born in the UK to pass his or her nationality on to a child born abroad.

  2. My understanding is that only one parent needs to be British to apply for citizenship of the child.

Check out this site it's very helpful:

  3. i can just tell you this:what ever it costs, how many lines you have to make, red tape to go through-if you really want this do it now because wen she is over 18 you can no longer do it.

  4. Contact the Consulate in Madrid, you should be able to make the application through them and they should be able to give you the information you need.
