What are the basics, the things I really need to know to be a good pet mom? I want to make sure it lives a happy healthy life. Also, for a female Yorkie pup, would Dee-Dee be a good name? What other cute "human" names would you suggest? Thanks!!!!

  1. Probably not a good name because when you start potty training, you will be saying something like, "Let's go Pee-Pee, or Tee-Tee"...sounds like Dee-Dee which is too confusing.

Give her an elegant name because she will be a pretty dog when her hair grows long.  Get a book on training toy dogs because it will make your life easier and she will be a better dog. Don't let her be a cutesey lap dog with no discipline or she will rule the roost when she gets older. All dogs operate on praise and reward so don't let people tell you she can't be trained so start early!.

I was given a FREE AKC teacup Yorkie because the original owners didn't believe she could be potty trained...she was 8 mos old and not housebroken.(They paid almost $800 for her and gave up!~what a deal for me!)  I got it done with consistency, praise, and help of some good books (amazon or 1/2 price books), plus a doggie door to help when I'm not home. (She's 2 1/2 yrs now).

Be aware that they are terriers which means fiercely protective and will sound the alarm (bark) to protect territory.  On the positive side, mine is playful, loves to cuddle, and sit in my lap & meet and greet at the pet store because she's so adorable.  I dress her up at Halloween to greet the kids and they love it!

They are susceptible to allergies so DO NOT feed her food with corn, corn gluten in it.  Go to PetSmart, the vet,  or a feed store and read the labels on the bag.  I go for the skin & coat formula on the better brands or grain free.  It's a few dollars more but worth it.  My dog takes Benadryl everyday to keep from scratching so be prepared for skin issues.  Also find a good groomer at your local vet office or their recommendation...you get much better deal & service in my experience.

It's all worth it...everyone loves her and she loves them.  Obedience can be done.....Clohey can sit, stay, down, leave it, dance for treat and has been certified as a Therapy Dog through the Delta Society.  Their life expectancy is around 16-17 yrs so get ready for a fun ride!

  2. Feed her a high quality puppy food ex. Royal Canin. I'd free feed her , Yorkies can have problems with hypoglycemia. Yorkies are stubborn to housebreak & have a very tiny bladder. Google crate training.  Take her outside every 30 minutes for the first month then every hour. I take my adult Yorkies out every 2 hours. Yorkies do require daily grooming, several owners like to keep theirs in a "puppy cut". Please don't put a collar on a Yorkie, it can cause their trachea to collsape. A harness is best.

As far as names have fun with it ! Look up popular baby names. I did name one of my females Taylor.
