Getting a college degree in a foreign country?

If I went to college in Ireland for pre-dentistry (I'm from the U.S.) would I be able to become a dentist in the United States? Here you have to go to college for 8 years, undergrad and graduate, but over there you only need 5 years.

I was thinking about Trinity College for example..

  1. Hey,

Although many private organizations accept international degrees, public agencies require you to have your degree accredited by a US service which provides accredition to US colleges thoughout the country.

When it comes to medicine degrees, you may have to go through a hassle of a process in-order for them to certify you. Do not choose a college simply based on duration, base where you wish to attend because you want to go there and work around the given enviroment.  The UK is very expensive and although 5 years sounds good, the tuition, accommodation, living expenses, airfare, pocket change will make you think twice. The Pound is 1.99 US Dollars, meaning it is worth double, so $10 is only 5, harsh reality.

Going abroad is a wonderful experience, but it's not something you should be impulsive about or casually interested in. You will leave your family and friends behind and its a big step to take, trust me.

  2. Expensive re-training would be needed in the U.S. if you got your degree from Ireland.

Medical degrees (included dentistry) do not transfer very well at all to the U.S. which is unfortunate since these professions are in high-demand in the U.S.
