Getting a connection to the internet wirelessly?

i just bought a hp dv5 laptop and i have a dell wireless system or adapter or whatever you call it hooked up to my pc and im getting internet connection from my pc but not from my laptop...my step mom has a laptop and hers is getting connection but mine isnt...the network name isnt even showing up when i click "connect to a network"...can anyone help explain to me what the problem might be and how i can fix this...im thinkin i need to reset adapter thing but im not sure

i think you should call the company of the router and then they should be able to guide you through the problem.
