i live in new york city, i am 18, and will be a full time college student come september. i am working at my first job and have received my paycheck. my gross pay was 671.88 for two weeks. my net pay was 526.45. However, people at my work were telling me that i can get my federal income tax money back (they took $68 from my pay check). can someone tell me how i can get this money, what forms to fill out, etc. Also, is it possible to get my NY state income tax and New York City Income tax back, both of which total to another $25 gone? my parents will be claiming me as a dependent. i will earn about $1650 gross for tax year 2008. and i have no other sources of income. i appreciate all your help

  1. You will get any excess tax withholding returned when you file your 2008 taxes in 2009.

  2. You can file a 1040Ex tax return at the end of the year.  If you have not made more than $5,450 you will get all of the Federal withholding back and most likely the same with the state.  About $51 of what they have taken out  each pay period is Social Security and Medicare and that will not be refunded to you.

  3. If you gross less than $5450 for 2008 you should get all of your federal income tax withholding back, if you file a tax return next year - use form 1040EZ.  You won't get back the amounts they withheld for social security and medicare.  Not sure about the NY withholding.

  4. You must file your 2008 tax return. If you are dependent, then you will not get personal exemption of $3500 (in 2008) and you will get standard deduction.
