  1. Are you an elite frequent flyer? If so, its ussualy automatically done.

If not...good luck. The airlines are not giving ANYTHING away anymore.

  2. when your booking....

  3. It depends how your are trying to get it? As the guy before me said the airlines are giving nothing away anymore those days of comp. upgrades are loooong gone. If you are trying to use miles you should contact your airline asap because those seats go pronto........If you want to buy a first class seat also contact your airline asap..........if your looking for a last minute upgrade seat ...good luck it will cost you a fortune...Airlines rather see them go empty then just give them away

  4. If you have elite frequent flyer status, do it as soon as the airline permits upgrade requests. Some allow it a few days before departure.

If you don't have elite frequent flyer status with the airline, or if you're not paying full price for your ticket, then don't waste your time trying. If there are any leftover first class seats, the airline will give them to their high-mileage frequent flyers first. If there are still any left over, which is highly improbable, they will give them to the passengers who paid the highest fares. They don't waste upgrades on occasional customers or people on discounted tickets - they take care of their most profitable customers first.

  5. Usually when you check in (especially if you do it at one of the self service kiosks) it will offer you an upgrade, if those seats are available for $100 or so.  Don't expect to get a free upgrade unless you are in the highest levels of the airline's frequent flyer program.
