I am about to begin gaining my master's that will lead to my teaching certification for special ed at a university located in pittsburgh, pa. i know that western pa is flooded with elementary general ed teachers, but does the same apply for special ed teachers? what other parts of the country have a high need for special ed teachers with a decent salary as compared to cost of living? any advice would be great:)

  1. Where I live there is a huge demand and great pay incentives. I think a fully credentialed sped teacher here starts at about $55K and works up from there, plus the stipend for being in SPED ($5000 a year I am guessing). You could go up as high as $80,000 if you stay long enough (my husband teaches regular ed and makes $67K after 11 years). I am in Palmdale, CA at Antelope Valley Union High School district. Now would be a good time to move to CA too because of the housing crash--you can buy a pretty nice home for much cheaper than in years past. But the catch is that you basically have to get another master's to have a CA clear credential; you'd have to check into whether or not your credential transferred to CA standards. Good luck!

  2. I really do not forsee you having a problem getting hired in the state of PA.  We need special educators everywhere!  My recommendation is to be very prepared for the interview.  You have got to know your stuff and be confident in your answers.  However, Hawaii is in desperate need!  They will pay for moving costs and living arrangements from what I understand.  I am not sure what the salary is, in comparison to the cost of living.  Do you have field experience or job related experience that will put you ahead of the rest?  This is key!  If you are coming in with a masters and no other real field experience, I can see you having a problem.  Schools are looking to start someone new to the field at a first year salary, not a masters salary.  I fear this might hurt you in the end... but I do not know your background at all.  But again, interview is key!  Nail that and you will be fine!

  3. Pretty much everywhere is in great need of special ed teachers - especially those who are passionate about helping our exceptional children.
