Question:

Getting accommodation in France at the end of July?

How difficult will it be to get accomodation in France at the end of July/ beginning of August.

I'm planning a driving trip from the UK down the western coast of France to the south of france. I'll be away about 2 weeks.

As it's peak time, will it be impossible to get accomodation last minute as we pull up? Should I book at least some of it in advance?

  1. well, I think you should book all your accommodation now.  This is so that you can relax, have lunch, dinner etc, knowing that you aren't going to have to hunt down a room for the night.

we liked the Ibis at Bordeaux, if you go that way.  It is on the opposite bank from the town centre so is peaceful and from the promenade you get a lovely view of the town lights.

beware of La Rochelle, Ile de Re, it can be very expensive to eat and drink there

    bonne route

  2. It may be difficult to get accommodation at this time of the year as most of France seems to be on holiday during August. However, something can always be found with a bit of planning.  One method would be to go online to the Accor hotels website. They have several chains in their "collection" including Mercure, Formule 1 and, my preference, Ibis which are the equivalent of Travelodge - basic but acceptable with good breakfasts (cost extra) and, more often than not, a restaurant on site just in case!  You could book your first night's stop online before you go (they are offering 10 euros per room discount at the moment) and then you can ask them to book each night's stay before you leave in the morning so you know you have a night booked. This service is free and I have used it many times. Along the west coast there are Ibis hotels atRoscoff, Brest, Landerneau,  Lorient, Qiberon, Vannes, la Baule, Nantes, la Roche-sur-Yon, les Sables d'Olonne, la Rochelle, Rochefort,  Bordeaux, Arcachon, Bayonne, Biarritz and others. If I were you I would book your first couple of nights in advance and do it no!! The  Ibis website is www.ibishotel.co. and Accor hotels' site is www.accorhotels.com

  3. There will always be some accomodation, but it may be hard to find. Try accor hotel group on line, everything from bargain basement to full out luxury in most areas of France.
