Question:

Getting around Long Island, NY on transit...and areas to live.?

I may be relocating for a job located on Long Island and do not plan on getting a car. I'm wondering how easy is it to get around using transit alone?

Can anyone also recommend some good areas to live? (single, female, 20s) I've been to NYC many times, but never Long Island. I'm wanting to be no more than an hour...1hr 15min from Manhattan and about the same from Port Jefferson (where my work would be). I'd love to live in Brooklyn, but I don't think it's easy to get to Port Jefferson by transit?

Thanks!

  1. Out on Long Island you need a car.  That is NOT NYC and the transit system is NOTHING like NYC.

I lived in NYC since 1972 and my sister moved out to the island about 15 years ago.

Living in Brooklyn and commuting to Long Island would be... unbearable.  You can try doing that in Queens but not Brooklyn.  You can even try doing that from Manhattan.

    Good Luck...
