Getting back into the US w/o a Passport?

Is it possible to get back into the US ( from mexico) without a passport? I heard somewhere that a birth cert will work. Any truth to this?

Tonlac is correct and you can do that until June 2009 and then everyone will need a passport for all modes of entry and reentry.

Are you a US citizen?  If you're traveling by car, all you need is your birth certificate and government-issued ID (driver's license).
