Question:

Getting back to my ancestry?

Hallo,

I'm a 14 year old that has completely become preoccupied with his German heritage. I am German both on my mothers and fathers side. I'm learning German by myself and it is really coming along. What more can I do to go back to my roots. I want to know if I "look" German, and if not how can I make improvements to do so.

  1. Don't worry about your looks; they're not really relevant.

Follow the advice above, and check out http://tedpack.org for more pointers.

And keep up with the German language studies. It's a great language, and might come in handy when you go there in ten years. Which, I think, you probably will.

    Happy hunting!

  2. Start compiling your family tree. Start with talking to your parents and grandparents then collect birth, death, baptism and other records. Then join a site such as "Genes Reunited" or buy a Genealogy program for your computer (most likely 'Gedcom') and start making your family tree.

Use the internet to locate sites that look at names, look for sites with your family name and also other genealogy sites in your country and in Germany.

You will be surprised at how quickly you can accumulate names and other details.

  3. You could go to Google Images and see for yourself. Search for "German rock climbers" or "German bicyclist" or German something else that will exclued German Shepards and pictures of castles along the Rhine.

If you use "German teen", "German blond" or the like, set the filter high or you'll get a lot of p**n and not much German.

  4. Good for you!  It is really fun doing your family tree.  I only wish I started researching my heritage when I was 14, instead I started too late and have so many unanswered questions because a lot of relatives with the good stories have died.  Keep it up!

Check out this site for German genealogy links:

If you want a free download for family tree software, try Personal Ancestral File (PAF) at familysearch.org:

And like Boomer said above Ted Pack's site is a great place to start.

BTW you look good just as you are  : )
