Question:

Getting caught using limewire, on a mac?

My university is really strict about using illegal things like limewire and frostwire, like 1000 students got caught last year. So of course i deleted it, i mean moved limewire to my trashcan, i have a mac and am not really sure how to uninstall software.

It says on the guidelines from my college that we should also delete any documents we obtained from limewire, i.e. like ALL of my songs.

Do i have to delete all my songs or do you think i will be safe just removing the program, and how exactly do i remove the program off my mac

any help will be great thanks!

  1. Tisk tisk.... P2P is bad...

But, that is not the bad part...

    1) - It is YOUR computer.  Not theirs.  They have no say of what you can and cannot have on YOUR computer.  If it is illegal/wrongfully downloaded software/music/documents than it is up to the owner to go after you.  The school is just trying to cover their rear.

    2) - You could still have Limewire installed, just don't run it (at ALL)on the schools network.  Lets pretend it is a MACbook Air.  You 'could' take it to a coffee shop/friends house that doesn't block that port(s) and download from there, just not on the school network.

  2. You're fine just removing the program, they can never tell where you got those songs from, they're just scaring you. Even if they personally checked your PC, you would be fine.

And they can only tell if you're USING limewire, not if you have it installed (because that would violate your privacy) so you can keep it installed to use at home or whatever, just don't run the program at school.

  3. You rarely have to "uninstall" applications in OS X; just dragging them to the trash is all it takes (make sure to empty your trash to actually delete things; the Trash is just a temporary folder). You might also want to do a Spotlight search with the application or developer name and remove any preference files or temporary folders it's left behind.

Like the other guys said; they just don't want you using it on their network.

  4. The university is not going to know what files you have on your computer. Limewire is 100% legal, just downloading copywritted content is not legal. There is no reason you should have to delete limewire. Just dont use it at uni, that is how you will get caught. Also if you are caught with the files on your computer, claiming you own the original files and these are simply duplicates should help get you out of trouble. I would say the 1000 students busted would have been downloading the content off torrent/p2p clients over the university's internet connection. That is an easy way of getting caught.

  5. If you want to keep your music, try putting it on a flash drive or MP3 player.
